Crisis Center Benefits from Chanute Prize Winners

A $500 check was presented by ArcelorMittal Global R&D, North America, based in East Chicago to the Crisis Center, a Lake Area United Way agency based in Miller. The check is given annually by Krieg DeVault Law Firm to the recipient of the Chanute Prize for Team Innovation awarded by the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana in its annual regional competition.

.

The ArcelorMittal Global R&D center was named a co-recipient this year of the Chanute Prize for helping design a state-of-the-art roof rail system used in the 2009 Ford 150 Truck. The advanced hydroformed project uses a new, high-strength steel application at the Indiana Harbor plant and involved a research team consisting of ArcelorMittal Global R&D, East Chicago, Ind.; Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Mich.; and Vari-Form, Strathroy, Ont.

.

ArcelorMittal Global R&D selected the Crisis Center as the recipient of the cash award because the centers work to help local children ties to the company’s commitment to create a safer community.

Army Specialist/Former Resident Tells Story

U.S Army Specialist Marvis Jackson, signal support systems specialist (pictured above) speaks to residents at the Crisis Center's emergency shelter -Alternative House.  Specialist Jackson was a resident in 2006, and returned to tell his story.

When asked about joining the military, Jackson replied,

"I decided to join the service because many people say they want to do something with their life and then they don't. I wanted to be the one who did something with my life. I have been in the Army for 2 and a half years and I don't plan on getting out. I plan on going until I retire.

He went on to offer a key piece of advice to the teens who looked on:

"Keep your head up because you make your own path in life; no one else can do it for you."

Former Volunteers Find Success in College

The Crisis Center's youth development program, Youth As Resources, lost a few great volunteers this past fall, like Angelo Padilla(above) to college.  Although we'll miss their participation, we congratulate them on moving forward to university life.
