Program Description:

YAR at the Crisis Center, a youth-led group that initiates and carries out a community service project or event that tackles a social problem or assists development.   Events or projects are held once a month, throughout the year.

From health, housing, education and the environment, to drug abuse, gangs, illiteracy and crime--YAR advisory board members, funders, and project participants enjoy a meaningful service learning experience.

Program Eligibility: Youth and adults, ages 13 and up can serve on the Advisory Committee.

Volunteers Needed: YES; energetic, committed teens to gain experience, have fun, and serve on the YAR Advisory Committee.  Meetings & events held only once a month, and usually in Lake County to make it convenient.  Food always served!

Program Coordinator Spotlight -

Gavin Mariano has overseen YAR since 2002 and has recruited hundreds of youth participants since then.

Mariano also serves as the Crisis Center's Public Relations and I.T Specialist; and Safe Place Asst.

Member Spotlight -

Nikki Kiszka, 18
Freshman Purdue University Calumet; majoring in psychology
Graduated from Gavit High School (class of 2010) in Hammond
favorite music is alternative rock; has been in YAR for a year; enjoys reading.
Nikki's thoughts about YAR: "Thanks to Y-A-R, I now have a better understanding of what is most important to me in life- knowing that I can help make someone else's life a little better everyday."
